New York: The City That Never Sleeps

Accommodations

Our New York journey began at the luxurious Lottie Palace hotel that definitely lived up to its name. While the hotel's dining options were a bit steep for our budget, the comfort and elegance of our stay set the tone for our Big Apple experience.

Times Square and City Views

Nothing quite prepares you for the sensory overload of Times Square. The pulsating energy, the dazzling billboards, and the constant hustle and bustle create an atmosphere that's uniquely New York. It's a place where you can feel the heartbeat of the city.

Our ascent to the top of the Empire State Building provided a different perspective altogether. The panoramic views of the city stretched out before us like a living map, each skyscraper and avenue telling its own story. It's a view that cements New York's reputation as one of the world's most impressive urban landscapes.

Lady Liberty and Staten Island Ferry

One of our savviest moves was taking the Staten Island Ferry to see the Statue of Liberty. Not only was it free, but it also offered incredible views of the harbor and the city skyline. As we approached Lady Liberty, her iconic silhouette growing larger, we felt a sense of awe that no photograph could capture. 

Culinary Delights

New York's food scene didn't disappoint. We discovered charming local cafes for breakfast, with Gregory's Cafe standing out for its delicious offerings. The Mediterranean restaurants we tried offered a tasty alternative to typical American fare. While prices were slightly higher than in London, the quality and variety made every meal worthwhile.

Los Angeles: Where Dreams Take Flight

Rock and Roll Accommodations

Landing at LAX, we transitioned from the vertical cityscape of New York to the sprawling horizontality of Los Angeles. Our home base was the Andaz Hotel on Sunset Boulevard, a place steeped in rock and roll history that perfectly captured the essence of Hollywood glamour. The hotel was great. It had a roof top pool with views of Hollywood Hills. Laying on the Sunbed next to the pool made you feel like a real Hollywood star.

Walk of Fame and Celebrity Homes

Our LA adventure kicked off with a stroll down the Walk of Fame, where the stars beneath our feet reminded us of the city's cinematic legacy. The bus tour of celebrity homes that followed was a fascinating glimpse into the lives of the rich and famous, complete with insider tips on celebrity spotting.

Lights, Camera, Action!

Our visits to Universal, Paramount, and Warner Brothers studios were a dream come true for movie buffs. Each offered a unique experience, but Paramount's in-depth, behind-the-scenes tour was particularly enlightening. It lacked the flashiness of some others but made up for it with substance and fascinating industry insights.

A unexpected highlight occurred at Warner Brothers when we encountered Ian Armitage, the young star of "Young Sheldon," showing his parents around. This chance meeting and photo opportunity added a personal touch to our Hollywood experience.

Santa Monica: Sun, Surf, and Family Fun

No trip to LA is complete without a visit to the beach, and Santa Monica didn't disappoint. The powerful waves were a hit with my son, making it the highlight of his trip. The pier's mini fairground and eateries added to the fun, creating a perfect family day out despite the crowds.
